Credit card holders 'warned of cold-caller card scam'
Credit card holders have been warned about the rising popularity of an old-style phone scam.
Credit card holders 'warned of cold-caller card scam'
According to the UK Payments Administration, a scam where people are phoned by fraudsters pretending to be from their bank, credit card company or the police is hitting some card holders.
The fraudsters often tell the victim they are from a bank and have records that a fraudulent transaction has taken place on the victim's card.
They then ask the victim to write down the pin number of the debit or credit card and place it in an envelope with the card, before offering to send a courier to collect it.
A genuine courier then arrives, who usually has no idea that scam is taking place, and delivers the credit card and pin to the fraudster who then uses it to withdraw money from cash machines.
Katy Worobec, head of fraud control at Financial Fraud Action UK said debit and credit card holders should not disclose their pin or financial information to anyone who has cold-called them.
"Fraudsters have been targeting particular groups of cardholders. So far some of the victims have included pensioners and members of the Asian community.
"However, what is now clear is that the scam is becoming more widespread," she added.
Checking credit card statements regularly is another way card holders can help to protect themselves against other types of card fraud.
