Holidaymakers who booked with their credit card should get a full refund, whereas those who used a debit card or other payment method are not guaranteed their money back.
Booking through a tour operator affiliated to the Air Travel Organisers' Licensing (Atol) scheme also offers some protection when an airline goes bust.
The airline collapsed this week (December 16th), leaving 4,000 passengers stranded abroad.
A further 1,300 people were due to fly on the airline today and have had their flights cancelled.
For those planning to re-book their holiday on another airline, the Zero Santander credit card could be a good option for vacation spending as there is no foreign exchange fee on the card.
The credit card won a European Oscard award this week in the service category.
