Credit card holders 'must follow guidelines'
Credit card holders should stick to the rules, financial expert Cliff D'Arcy has advised.
Credit card holders should stick to the rules, financial expert Cliff D'Arcy has advised.
He said that if you make the most of your credit card and stick to a few rules such as spending sensibly and repaying your monthly bill in full, it is possible to enjoy 59 days of interest-free credit and a yearly cashback rebate too.
One tip is to avoid fines by setting up a monthly standing order or direct debit for at least the minimum monthly payment. Credit card holders can make extra repayments as well when they have the money to do so, said Mr D'Arcy.
Using a 0% balance transfer can help credit card holders to avoid high interest rates, the expert writes on lovemoney.co.uk.
He said: "By shifting your debt to a 0% credit card, you can dodge interest for up to 16 months. Then again, there is a price to pay for stopping the clock on your interest bill: these deals come with a transfer fee, typically 3% of the debt transferred."
The 0% transfer card that Cliff D'Arcy uses himself is the Virgin Credit Card which, he claims, has topped the best buy tables for months.
It offers a 0% balance transfer for 16 months from the date that the account is opened.
According to the British Bankers' Association, there were 66.6 million credit cards in issue at the end of February this year.
