Credit card holders interest rates 'should not be increased without warning'
MP for Runcorn Mike Hall suggested a ban should be put in place to prevent credit card companies from increasing customers' interest rates without giving them due warning, the Runcorn and Widnes Weekly News reports.
The minister's comments follow the government's announcement that store and credit card firms would face more control.
However, Mr Hall proposed that more must be done to help credit card holders, particularly during the economic downturn.
"Whether it's over-the-top charges in credit card bills, credit repayments or the high cost of credit on things like store cards, it's clear that something needs to be done to help customers," he said, according to the local publication.
Mr Hall added he would ask the government to restrict or ban the repricing of existing debt.
The Department for Business, Innovation and Skills is considering proposals to increase the minimum payment that credit card holders must pay off each month in order to accelerate the rate of repayment.
Another measure being considered is changing the order of credit card repayments so that card holders can pay off their most expensive debts first.
