According to Which? Money, many of the practical things that people do every day go out of their head and holidaymakers can end up doing things they would never consider at home.
Dan Moore, senior researcher at Which? Money, said that wearing lighter clothing on holiday can also make debit and credit card holders more likely targets of theft because it is easier to see that they are carrying a wallet.
Mr Moore's comments follow the release of new research from life assistance company CPP which showed that there has been a 17% increase in lost and stolen debit and credit cards abroad in the past year.
To avoid being targeted by card thieves, Mr Moore recommended staying aware while relaxing and enjoying being on vacation.
"It just might be that you are at a cash machine for a slightly longer time than normal and if you had someone who was stalking anyone using that cash machine, they could tell you are a tourist and you might be an easier target. You may have a big baggy beach bag, things that they can get their hands into as they know you've got cash out," he said.
