Credit card fraud tackled by BMS
A new approach to credit card fraud may result in a widespread reduction in card crime, according to its inventors.
The so-called 'particle approach', designed by Bayer Material Science (BMS), involves the incorporation of the company's specially-developed Makrofol ID ProteXXion polycarbonate film into all new credit and security cards.
Dirk Pophusen, head of business development in the company's films unit, told europeanplasticnews.com: "This adds an extra dimension to any security card."
The film contains unique metallic identification particles called 'OVDots', which are arranged in customised patterns to provide completely individual security features to each credit card.
The company claim features such as company logos, national symbols and pictograms can be infused into the card's security pattern using the new OVDot technology, according the website.
It is hoped the new technology will be incorporated initially across the German credit card market in order to tackle the country's 40 million euro annual credit card fraud bill.
BMS is one of the world's largest manufacturers of polymers and high-performance plastics.
