Credit card fraud 'not a victimless crime'
Credit card fraud is not a victimless crime, the UK's fraud prevention service, CIFAS, has said.
Although credit card holders who are victims of fraud are often able to get the money returned on transactions that they did not make, the ordeal can be traumatic, CIFAS said.
Selina Hall told the service how her account was used by a fraudster to fund multiple online purchases over a few days.
Ms Hall was able to cancel the purchases because her credit card provider realised that the purchases were out of character and phoned her to make sure that she had made them.
"I've always been worried about having my details stolen and being impersonated, but in this case they did not even have to go to those lengths. I've been left wondering who broke into my account and how," she said.
According to the UK payments association Apacs, losses on transactions due to fraud on the UK high street have reduced by 67 per cent over the past three years due to the success of chip and pin.
