Festus Emosivwe of Commercial Road, Portsmouth, bought electrical items, a flight and laptop computers using other people's accounts, the Portsmouth News has reported.
The 25-year-old was given a 26-week suspended sentence by Portsmouth Crown Court, according to the paper.
Householders are also being warned to be careful when giving out credit card details over the phone, by North Yorkshire Police.
The advice follows an incident when a homeowner gave out their credit card details to a fraudster who claimed to be from BT.
