Other issues covered in the Money Saving Handbook include the problems that can be encountered when remortgaging and help with reclaiming bank charges.
The book also looks at how drivers can save money on fuel bills.
Author Tony Levene explains that "if you can reduce your fuel bill by a couple of pounds each journey by making a few simple changes to the way you drive or use your car, why not? With petrol costs rising and people feeling the pinch, those couple of pounds could make all the difference at the moment".
Tony Levene is a personal finance journalist and writes about issues such as credit cards in the Guardian.
Last year he was given an award for consumer champion of the year.
