Consumers "migrating" from debit to credit cards
Customers are moving their spending from debit cards to credit cards as a result of the global economic slowdown, it has been suggested.
Donald MacLeod, head of Sainsbury's Credit Cards says that traditionally, there has been a steady move away from credit to debit cards.
However, this has now been reversed.
"We are seeing customers migrating their spending from debit to credit card," he states.
The sector commentator explains one factor that may be contributing to this shift could be the additional protection offered by credit cards when shopping online.
He notes that there is a certain amount of security when making purchases with a debit card.
"Although, ultimately you will not get the same protection as you would with a credit card," Mr MacLeod concludes.
The expert's comments follow the publication of the quarterly statistical release by Apacs in November.
It indicated there were 1.9 billion plastic card purchases made in the UK in the third quarter of 2008.
