Potential Barclaycard customers can check their eligibility for the credit card using a pre-application check.

According to Barclaycard, it is the first credit card provider to offer such a check.

It will allow customers to discover the likelihood of their eligibility within a couple of minutes.

The online facility will not affect consumer's ability to get credit in the future.

It is not a formal credit application and simply leaves a search note on the credit file to show the information has been accessed.

Amer Sajed, chief executive of Barclaycard UK, said: "Consumers currently need to apply in full for a credit card in the UK, without knowing whether they are likely to be accepted or not, leaving a search on their credit file which can potentially have a negative impact on their credit rating.

"This unique pre-application check solves this problem."

Barclaycard currently has 11.9 million customers in the UK and a total of 11.8 million international customers.

Barclaycard is currently offering a Simplicity credit card with an interest rate of 6.8% APR typical variable, as well as 6.8% interest on all balance transfers paid in full with no handling fee.
