Consumers 'are gaining confidence about shopping online using debit and credit cards'
David Smith, director of operations for IMRG - a membership community for the e-retail industry - said that consumers have become savvier over the last few years about shopping online, which can be done using a debit or credit card.
He added that consumers are using the web to compare prices and do their research before they make their purchases.
All different types of people are coming to realise the benefits of online shopping.
In the past, online shopping was the domain of young men, Mr Smith noted, but now as many women as men use the resource.
Increasing numbers of women are shopping online for clothes, he added.
"You have sites like ASOS and Littlewoods with all their rich media [where] you can see models in the clothes, zoom right in close, and that has done away with the myth of people not wanting to shop online for clothes," Mr Smith said.
In related news, according to the Consumer Confidence index from Nielson and the British Retail Consortium, confidence has risen to its highest level for 18 months.
