Consumer Advocate 'could benefit credit card holders'
Credit card holders could benefit from the government's decision to appoint a Consumer Advocate.
The position is designed to provide consumers with someone to help them get their money back when things go wrong.
It is hoped the Consumer Advocate will also co-ordinate work to raise awareness of important consumer issues.
The proposal was set out in the government's consumer white paper today, called A Better Deal for Consumers - Delivering Real Help Now and Change for the Future.
Credit card cheques are also to be banned under the new proposals.
It is hoped that the new measures will help guard against people running up store and credit card debts they can not afford to pay off.
Consumer minister Kevin Brennan said: "Consumers have been seriously affected by the past two years of turmoil in the financial markets, as well as by the longer term changes in the way that goods and services are bought and sold. We are taking decisive action now to prepare for the future."
The news comes as new statistics from charity Credit Action revealed that personal debt in May was £233 billion.
