FairFX and CaxtonFX offer very competitive exchange rates on pre-paid cards, it has been suggested.

According to a comparison service, online research can also help holidaymakers to save money on exchange rates before they go abroad.

Peter Harrison, travel money expert at moneysupermarket.com, said: "If you have prepared, you can get the most competitive exchange rates by looking at Travelex online and then picking up at the airport. They offer you very different rates than if you were to pick up at the airport alone."

At 18:05BST on September 29th, rates were 1.09417.

This is significantly less than its peak in January 2007 before the start of the economic crisis, when the exchange rate was 1.50687.

FairFX has recently suggested people planning holidays in Europe or the US could buy their currency now to beat the slide of the pound.
