Church collection reflects card trend
Churches are being forced to catch up with spending trends and make sure their weekly collection facilitates debit and credit card payments.
Stevens Creek Church in Augusta, Georgia is heading the revolution, with lead pastor Dr Marty Baker installing kiosks to help bring in the plastic payments they've been praying for in the difficult economic climate.
He has also set up a company with his wife, Patty, to allow other congregations to harness the technology as well.
Securegive.com, along with the payment kiosks, has so far seen Stevens Creek Church take in almost half a million dollars a year electronically.
In related news, recent figures from payments association Apacs show British consumers are increasingly using debit and credit cards instead of cash or cheques to make purchases.
Use of the latter dropped 10.4% in 2008 on the previous year while debit card spending was up 9% to £245 billion.
