Jasmine Birtles, founder of Moneymagpie.com, said cashback sites can also be useful for online shopping and saving money.

Some cashback sites give you money for joining and others give you cashback when you have used a site once or twice and the money has been credited.

When this happens, the site may ask for consumers' bank details or they may put the money back on the credit card, she added.

Ms Birtles' comments follow the release of a report by price comparison site Kelkoo, which revealed that British shoppers are missing out on £3.2 billion each year by not taking advantage of cashback services when shopping online.

The survey also found that the reason why most British consumers are not taking advantage of the cashback is due to a lack of knowledge about these services.

Ms Birtles also recommended a website that allows consumers to give their cashback straight to charity.

"There's a site called Giveortake.com where you can say if you would like the money to go to a charity instead, this is particularly a good thing for coming up to Christmas because a lot of people have cut back on their charity giving so this is a way of doing something without noticing," she said.
