Card fraud numbers down "massively"
The amount of fraudulent card activity is down "massively" thanks to the introduction of Chip and pin, according to a spokesperson for the tourism industry.
Although this type of crime has decreased generally, when it does happen it is usually during holiday transactions, explained Frances Tuke of Abta - the Travel Association.
This is because of card not present fraud, when people pose as customers using a fake identity to purchase holidays.
She also said some fraudsters pretend to be employees, then dishonestly extract personal data from cardholders.
"They literally jot down details of customers and phone them back saying 'there's been a problem with your card, you have to give me all your passwords'," Ms Tuke explained.
However, those who have a number of debit or credit cards may want to take extra precautions if they are going abroad by letting their provider know that transactions may take place in a different country for a certain period.
