Card fraud high but thieves outdone by technology

Credit and debit card fraud has risen in the UK but advances in technology mean that thieves are having to look to low tech means to complete their scams.

During the first six months of 2013, £216.1 million worth of card fraud was committed according to Financial Fraud Action; this is a 17 percent increase on the same period in the previous year and the highest seen since 2009.

However, it is not flaws within the card providers' systems that seem to be to blame but rather more low tech tactics that have involved tricking the card user into handing over their details. Among the measures they have taken include posing as police officers in order to persuade card users to hand over their details.

Credit cards are generally the safest way to keep cash but there are a few steps that users can take to ensure their money is well protected. Keep details such as your pin and passwords protected, if you have this information written down then store it away from your other financial documents.
