Businesses without websites 'could be missing out on turnover'
The research by PayPal and website creation package Mr Site, found that over half of small businesses in the UK do not currently have a website.
However, those who do reported an average 37% increase in turnover.
Businesses' websites can be a way of telling customers what services they provide, as well as allowing online payments for goods using debit or credit cards.
The researchers estimate that small businesses without websites could collectively be losing as much as £235 billion.
Cameron McLean, PayPal's general manager for UK merchant services, said: "Not having a website is like leaving your shop-front boarded up or refusing to tell customers anything about the services you provide. Creating an impressive 'virtual shop' is the way to stay ahead of the game and having a website can be more cost-effective for your business than a high street presence - and is a key launch pad to business success."
PayPal allows businesses and consumers to make and receive online payments using debit and credit cards.
An earlier study by the company revealed that almost one in four adults in the UK believe online shopping will become the norm and the high street will eventually die out.
