Brits should lookout for fake sites when shopping online this Christmas
UK credit card holders have been urged to be on the lookout for fake websites when shopping online this Christmas.
The Department of Enterprise, Trade and Investment's Trading Standards Service (TSS) has published a series of tips to help Brits stay safe when doing their Christmas shopping this year.
A spokesperson for the TSS advised online shoppers to watch out for unfamiliar sites, with auction sites among the most likely to be home to counterfeit goods.
They said: "It is always best to stick to familiar brand-name or retailer websites. You can also use search engines to research a website to see if people have had problems with them.
"Shoppers should be aware that a site ending .co.uk does not mean the trader is based in the UK. A seller based abroad can often be impossible to trace."
Fake goods are not just confined to the online marketplace, with shoppers also advised to be vigilant at street markets and car boot sales.
