Brits made 96 million visits to online retailers on Boxing Day
UK internet users are expected to have spent heavily this Boxing Day after new research showed that nearly 100 million visits were made to online retailers on 26th December.
Experian Hitwise UK has published figures which shows that Brits made a total of 96 million visits to e-retailers this Boxing Day, a rise of 19.5 per cent from the same day in 2010.
UK consumers are estimated to have spent a total of 13 million hours shopping on the internet in what Experian claims was the "biggest day in UK online shopping history".
James Murray, marketing and research analyst at Experian Hitwise UK, said: "This success is in part due to the increased interest in shopping on Christmas Day. The gathering momentum since Christmas Eve has led to the biggest online shopping day ever witnessed in the UK.
"Another contributing factor to the record-breaking figures was that Boxing Day fell on a Monday this year."
Meanwhile, a study from the IBM Coremetrics Benchmark Report revealed that sales from mobile devices accounted for 14.4 per cent of total online sales on 25th December, up from 5.3 per cent in 2010.
