Brits implored not to get into debt this Christmas
Britons have been urged not to go into debt this Christmas after new research revealed that a third of UK consumers are set to go in to the red over the festive period.
A survey conducted by YouGov has revealed that 31 per cent of Brits, including those already in arrears, are prepared to spend beyond their means this Christmas.
The majority of consumers are due to spend more than average on their credit card or use their overdraft to fund the additional spending.
In an interview with the Daily Mail, Reg Bailey, chief executive of Christian charity the Mothers’ Union, claimed there is too much pressure on people to buy expensive goods at Christmas.
“Children admit they pester their parents. But it’s terribly sad that we end up leaving parents feeling utterly guilty after Christmas, having desperately tried to make ends meet,” he told the news provider.
“Let’s reduce the anxiety and stress for parents, because this is a time when people are in difficult financial straits. We don’t want everyone getting into debt.”
