Britons urged to stay safe shopping online this Christmas
UK credit card holders have been urged to remain vigilant while shopping online this Christmas after new research revealed that many are at risk of online fraud.
Electronic payments giant PayPal has published the results of a survey which shows that around 39 million Brits will buy some or all of their Christmas gifts online this year. Online shoppers plan to spend an average of £245 this year, an eight per cent increase on last year.
However, many are running the risk of being the victims of online fraud as the study shows that that one in five consumers use the same password for various sites, while a third fail to look for the padlock icon when making a payment.
Overall, around five per cent of consumers do not take any precautions to protect themselves when buying gifts online.
Rob Skinner, consumer affairs manager at PayPal, said: "Christmas is always a busy time of year and online shopping is the perfect way to avoid the crowds and grab a bargain.
"Online festive shopping is incredibly convenient, but we'd urge shoppers to ensure that they stay safe when making purchases."
