Booze cruises popular around Christmas, says PKF
Booze cruises are increasingly popular with people looking to throw parties - and minimise the amount of VAT they pay - over the festive season, it has been suggested.
Booze cruises popular around Christmas, says PKF
Debbie Jennings, VAT director at PKF accountants and business advisers, explains that people can bring "an almost limitless" amount of products such as cigarettes and alcohol back with them if they go across the Channel via ferry.
She notes this is why so many people go for a round trip to France and pick up supplies using their credit cards when they are having Christmas parties.
Ms Jennings explains the 2.5 per cent reduction in VAT means the UK has one of the lowest levels of the tax in the EU, but states this is not the reason behind people heading to the continent.
"It isn't the VAT amount, it's the other added taxes on the traditional Christmas spend thats hitting near the wallet," she concludes.
VAT is set to remain at 15 per cent until January 1st 2010, when it will revert to 17.5 per cent.
