Credit card provider Barclaycard has hailed its new partnership with Orange the start of a payment "revolution".
The venture has seen the two firms unveil a new system allowing consumers to use their mobile phones as virtual credit cards.
By swiping the handset against a till reader, customers will be able to pay for goods and services without the need for plastic cards or coins as a chip in the phone automatically charges the relevant Barclaycard account.
In a statement, Orange and Barclaycard insisted the technology marked the "biggest revolution in payments since plastic cards were introduced over 40 years ago," reports the Telegraph.
The scheme is expected to become operational within three years, although bills must initially be under £10.
Meanwhile creditcards.com recently reported that a trial version of iPhone's credit card processing application is now available.
ProcessAway's developers announced last month that they will offer a free version of the programme on their website, ahead of software approval from Apple.
