Barclaycard reassures consumers over contactless cards
Barclays has moved to reassure customers that its so-called 'contactless' debit and credit cards will not be easy prey for fraudsters.
The company has been developing the contactless credit card system, which allows users to simply swipe their card over a scanner to pay for goods and services, over recent months and has this week launched the technology after a successful trial.
The debit and credit cards will be sent to all of Barclays' customers when their current cards expire and the bank has looked to reassure those worried about the potential for credit card fraud under the new system.
"A lost and reported card will be immediately cancelled, and no longer useable," a spokeswoman for the group explained.
She told the Times: "A card that has been lost but unreported for whatever reason can only be used four or five times before a PIN is demanded."
The upper limit that can be paid for at any one time under the new credit card scheme is £10, meaning that if anyone did use the card fraudulently, they would be unable to buy much before having to enter a PIN.
Barclays expects the majority of its customers to be transferred to the contactless debit and credit cards by 2011, with over three million customers expected to be using the technology by the end of this year.
Around 8,000 retailers have installed the scanning technology required to read the new cards.
