Barclaycard plans to go contactless in 2009

Barclaycard has announced plans to incorporate contactless technology into some of its plastic cards during 2009, with more than three million people expected to be using such payment methods by the end of the year.
Debit cards issued or renewed by the financial service provider from March will be contactless.
The cards use the technology to allow transactions of £10 or less to be carried out by holding the card up to a special reader - without the user having to enter a Pin code or place it into a terminal.
Chip and Pin will remain a feature of the cards and will be used for purchases and ATM transactions.
From time to time, users will be prompted to enter their Pin in order to confirm their identity.
Mark Parsons, managing director of current accounts at the company, comments: "This gives people a new way to pay for things that is quick, secure and convenient - and we are confident that it is going to be really popular with customers."
Barclays' credit card offerings include the OnePulse, which has a built-in Oyster card that makes use of contactless technology.
