Barclaycard: Five million contactless debit and credit cards have been issued
A total of five million contactless debit and credit cards have now been issued in the UK by Barclays and Barclaycard, according to the credit card providers.
The cards make payments for goods under £10 faster and easier as they can be made by holding the contactless debit or credit card next to a reader, without the need to enter a pin number or sign a receipt.
Contactless payments facilities are now available at all Caffe Nero and Pret A Manger outlets.
This means that contactless payments can now be made in these and 20,000 other outlets across the UK.
Chief executive of Barclaycard UK, Amer Sajed, commented: "Consumer feedback highlights the increasing demand for contactless payment and we expect to see more retailers follow Caffe Nero and Pret A Manger and sign up to contactless in the near future."
The Barclaycard OnePulse credit card is one of the contactless payment cards available. It has a typical variable interest rate of 14.9% and offers 5% cashback on Transport for London spending, including on the Congestion charge, until December 2010.
