Barclaycard: Christmas shoppers spent until the last minute
A study by Barclaycard Payment Acceptance indicates more than 11.5 million transactions were processed for its retailer customers on Christmas Eve last year.
Transactions reached a peak at 12:25 GMT on December 24th 2008 when 387 debit and credit card payments were processed every second for the company's 93,000 retailers in the UK.
Shoppers continued to spend on debit and credit cards between Christmas Day and New Year's day, with the volume of purchases increasing by 8.8 per cent in comparison to the same period in 2007.
Antony Jenkins, chief executive at Barclaycard, comments: "We have also seen a significant increase in post-Christmas shopping versus December 2007 as the sales have continued."
Barclaycard's Goldfish Credit Card offers users points - which can be redeemed at a number of high street retailers - when they spend.
