Barclaycard celebrates four year 'contactless' anniversary
Barclaycard is celebrating the anniversary of its innovative contactless debit and credit cards in the UK this month.
The 'wave and pay' cards were first launched by Barclaycard back in 2007, with customers able to make purchases of £15 or under by touching their cards against a reader.
Around 13.5 million contactless cards have so far been issued by Barclays in all territories, with approximately one in eight Barclaycard holders now able to use the contactless system.
Contactless payments are also being launched on smartphones too, thanks to Near Field Communications technology.
Last week saw the release of the new Orange and Barclaycard backed Samsung Wave 578 the second mobile platform to use the Quicktap system.
The credit card provider has now introduced 60,700 contactless pay terminals across the UK, as it strives to promote cash-free transactions.
Last June, Barclays was given the Positive Change Award from the Which? consumer group for the changes it has introduced for customers.
"In an industry that has been criticised for not putting its customers first, this bank has made some significant improvements this year," said Which? chief executive Peter Vicary-Smith.
Its contactless payments have gone from strength to strength, with 1.4 million wave and pay purchases already made in 2011.
