Asia Pacific cities dominate MasterCard destination list

The continued growth of cities in the Asia Pacific region was highlighted after new statistics from MasterCard revealed a rise in visitor numbers and expenditure in the region.

These figures come as part of the latest MasterCard Global Destination Cities Index, which was released today (June 18th) and serves as a barometer for understanding the global travel economy.

Cities in the index are ranked in terms of international arrivals and cross-border spending, with the results highlighting the increasing influence of cities in the Asia Pacific region, with eight of the top 20 fastest-growing destination cities coming from the region.

The biggest climber was Bangkok, which was ranked third for international arrivals with 12.2 million visitors expected this year and is expecting around £12.3 billion ($19.3 billion) to be spent in the city by inbound passengers in 2012.

Commenting on the figures, MasterCard Worldwide global economic adviser Dr Yuwa Hedrick-Wong said: "Asia’s destination cities continue their rise, expecting a significant upward trend in visitor arrivals and cross-border spend - most of them on the back of large double digit growth."

London remained the top city in the world with visitor numbers of 16.9 million expected this year, just ahead of Paris which is projected to receive 16 million inbound passengers.

The English capital is also ranked ahead of cross-border expenditure, just ahead of New York, with the cities expected to receive $21.1 billion and $19.4 billion respectively.
