Apacs: Credit card spending sees slight increase
The data by UK industry association Apacs showed that credit card consumer spending went up by 2%.
Debit card spending at retailers increased by 6.8%, now accounting for two-thirds of spending on plastic cards.
Only 3% of spending was done last year on cheques.
Director of communications at Apacs Sandra Quinn said: "The rise to dominance of the debit card both on and off the high street has been meteoric - it was only back in December 2004 that combined total credit and debit card spending overtook total cash spending for the first time."
According to statistics released yesterday by the British Bankers' Association, the number of purchases on credit cards was up by 1.6% from last year.
