ABTA recommends research before using credit cards abroad
Holidaymakers have been urged to do some research before using credit cards while abroad to avoid being stung by surprise charges.
Gillian Edwards, a spokesperson for ABTA, the travel association, acknowledged that tourists are often keen to spend on credit and debit cards due to the convenience.
However, she stressed in an interview with the Scotsman that hidden charges can make this a costly method of payment when used overseas.
"To avoid a nasty surprise in their bank account on return to the UK, savvy holidaymakers can make significant savings by doing some research before they go," Ms Edwards advised.
The ABTA source added that it often makes sense to take out a large chunk of money at the start of a holiday to avoid amassing several individual withdrawal fees.
Her comments come shortly after Lloyds TSB revealed that the average British consumer is planning to save more than £5,000 this year in order to cover expenses such as holidays and deposits on a first home.
