Meanwhile, just 86% of those living in the West Midlands have a debit or credit card, making this region the area with the lowest proportion of people with plastic cards.
The research from the Payments Council shows how payment attitudes and behaviours vary from region to region around the UK.
It also revealed 59% of those living in the south east use phone or internet banking, compared to 46% in the north east.
Adults in East Anglia, meanwhile, make the lowest number of cash machine withdrawals.
Director of communications Sandra Quinn commented on the study: "This research, on the whole, confirms long standing trends; increasing reliance on debit cards and phone or internet banking and a noticeable decline in use of cheques."
However, Ms Quinn also noted there are areas that do not conform to national averages, for example 46% of adults in the north-east use internet or phone banking, which is 7% below the national average.
In related news, a total of £246 million was expected to be spent on last minute shopping on Christmas Eve using credit cards, according to Sainsbury's credit cards.
