Nearly a fifth of those want to do to home improvements to add value to their homes, according to the study by unbiased.co.uk.
Richard Winder, spokesperson for unbiased.co.uk, said: "As the housing market continues to show no solid signs of recovery, many consumers may be put off buying or selling a property."
Many are looking to home improvements to increase the value of the house they are in instead, he continued.
Research by Sainsbury's Home Insurance this week showed 65 per cent of British adults have performed DIY tasks such as painting, plumbing or tiling in the past year, rather than pay for professional help.
Those who have done their own household improvements claim to have saved over £49 billion in the last 12 months by doing so, the research suggested.
